Connecting breath, body and mind.
Born in The Netherlands, Julia van Beuningen trained as a classical cellist at the Royal College of Music, London. While working as a musician she uses her yoga practice to find balance in body and mind. Knowing the juxtaposition of a highly pressured environment in which simultaneously creativity needs to bloom, Julia wished to deepen her understanding of Yoga.
Julia trained at Sangye Yoga school London and teaches both privately as well as in studios like Bodyism, MAD mayfair and Sangye yoga school and Good Enough College.
Any student I meet is a unique individual who I want to listen to and observe in order inspire them towards a sustainable yoga practice.
Together with students I aim to ignite a curious mindset. With a humble attitude, peeling away the ego, we explore how to use the body as well as the mind most effectively in achieving their goals.
Curiosity over judgment
I believe it is helpful to think there is no ‘wrong’, there is only ‘different’.
It is great to see students surprise themselves by their own ability when freeing the mind of unhelpful thoughts. This key element in my teaching is enabling students to observe their thoughts, and consciously decide which ones to choose. Practicing without fear or judgement enables us to be curious and our body to move freely. Letting go of preconceived ideas.
Mind over Matter
I teach my pupils to understand the sequence and asanas we practice so they can move with more confidence and less doubt. A deeper understanding of the complexities of certain poses will help cultivate compassion and patience.
Matter over Mind
Often we tend to be in a rush and distrust our ability in obtaining the ‘right’ result. So we ‘act’ and we ‘do’ and we push before we even realise what is present in our body now. By learning to observe the lessons of your body and the habits of your mind, we can learn to push less and allow our body to move as it naturally knows how to. I call this Matter over Mind.
